Tamil Nadu, Kerala clinch basketball titles

 Kerala and Tamil Nadu emerged champions in the boys’ and  girls’ categories respectively in the 33rd Youth National basketball championship at the Hasanamba Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

In the boys’ final, Kerala made light work of Uttar Pradesh to win 85-51, thanks to some impressive plays from Amal Reghu (33 points), Chacko C Simon (19) and Sejin Mathews (16). For UP, Priyanshu and Bhagyansh Gulati scored 21 points each.

In the girls’ title tie, Tamil Nadu powered past Kerala 82-66. Avanthi Vardhan (17) and S Pushpa (17) top-scored for the winners while Shreekala R, with 27 points, performed well for Kerala.

Karntaka boys finished fourth after going down 69-99 to Tamil Nadu in the third-fourth play-off. The girls ended seventh following their 63-47 win over Rajasthan in the classification match.

Results: Boys: Level 1: Final: Kerala: 85 (Amal Reghu 33, Chacko C Simon 19, Sejin Mathew 16, Shaun Luiz 10) bt Uttar Pradesh: 51 (Priyanshu 21, Bhagyansh Gulati 21).

3rd/4th place: Tamil Nadu: 99 (M Arvind Kumar 30, K Surya 23, T Prathap 15, B Tharun Kumar 12) bt Karnataka: 69 (Pratyanshu Tomar 22, Prashant Tomar 16, Srujan BK 13).

5th/6th place: Rajasthan: 72 (Ashish Trivedi 27) bt Chhattisgarh: 64 (Govind 20, Binod Rajak 17).

7th/8th place: Punjab: 49 (Princepal Singh 18, Vivek Chauhan 11) bt Delhi: 35 (Abhishek Sharma 14).

Girls: Level 1: Final: Tamil Nadu: 82 (Avanthi Vardhan 17, S Pushpa 17, T Dharshini 13, J Monica Jayaseeli 12) bt Kerala: 66 (Shreekala R 27, Olivia Shaibu 13, Jayalakshmi VJ 11, Festy P Jose 10).

3rd/4th place: Uttar Pradesh: 71 (Vaishnavi Yadav 39, Shruti Yadav 12) bt Madhya Pradesh: 39 (Divyani Gangwal 22). 

5th/6th place: Maharashtra: 73 (Sakshi Kotian 18, Shreya Dandekar 18, Anshika Kanojia 17) bt Chhattisgarh: 41 (Elizabet Ekka 19, Neha Karya 10).  

7th/8th place: Karnataka: 63 (Aishwarya YB 15, Keerthana G 13, Harshitha R 13) bt Rajasthan: 47 (Yashika Singhal 16, Nandita Choudhary 13, Simran Birla 11). 

Final standings: Boys: Kerala, 1; Uttar Pradesh, 2; Tamil Nadu, 3; Karnataka, 4; Rajasthan, 5; Chhattisgarh, 6; Punjab, 7; Delhi, 8.
