Trisha Chetty spent a productive day on either side of the stumps as South Africa kicked off their women’s Twenty20 World Cup campaign with a comfortable six-wicket victory over hosts Sri Lanka in a Group B match on Wednesday.

Pace bowler Susan Benade (2-7) and leg-spinner Dane van Neikerk (2-9) wrecked the Sri Lankan top order before South Africa’s sharp fielding was rewarded with five runs outs as Sri Lanka were dismissed for just 79 runs in 20 overs.

In the second match, West Indies, riding on an unbeaten half-century from Deandra Dottin, posted a resounding seven-wicket win over New Zealand.

New Zealand posted 117 for nine in their 20 overs, while the Windies, in reply, scaled the target with two overs to spare.

New Zealand: 117/9 in 20 overs (Suzie Bates 32; Stafanie Taylor 2-29, Anisa Mohammed 2-17, Shemane Campbelle 2-22) lt to West Indies: 118/3 in 18 overs (Stafanie Taylor 35, Deandra Dottin 58 n.o.; Erin Bermingham 2-18).
