Government and trade officials have said India, the world's biggest exporter of rice, does not plan to curb shipments for now.

KSCA assistant secretary Santosh Menon made a surprise announcement at the launch function of the seventh edition of the Karnataka Premier League here on Thursday, saying Robin Uthappa will be part of Saturday's auction.

"As you'll are aware Karun Nair has been chosen for the first three Tests against England. So it's obvious he won't be available for the KPL. Robin Uthappa will replace him in the auction pool," Menon said, a news that drew everyone's attention.

Uthappa, one of the standout players during Karnataka's dominant run a few years ago, left the State for Saurashtra at the start of last season. When asked how Uthappa is eligible for KPL, Menon reasoned he's still a registered player of the State.

"Last season Robin took a NOC (No Objection Certificate) from us so that he could play for other states. But he's a domicile Karnataka player. He lives here. He's registered with Swastic Union. This qualifies him to be a part of KPL. Over the years we've had so many Karnataka players representing others states and institutions and they'be part of KPL. Last year Robin was not part of the auctions because he was unavailable. Since this year he has no other commitments, he's opted to play in KPL."

Many owners were delighted at Uthappa's availability, saying they won't mind breaking the bank for his services.
