Thapliyal was 74. He was admitted to the Metro Hospital here after complaining of liver problem on December 2.
Thapliyal worked for over three decades with hindi daily 'Hindustan' and before that worked as a freelance journalist for 'National Herald'.
The journalist is survived by wife, two sons and one daughter.
His cremation will be performed at Nigambodha Ghat at 1 o'clock tomorrow.
