As 2024 comes to an end, Spotify users in India are gearing up for the annual Wrapped report that offers a customised recap of their listening habits over the year. But, out of the blue, Spotify has stopped working on thousands of phones around the country.

Several people took to X and Reddit to ask fellow Spotify users if their app was working or not. Some are complaining that their playlists are showing blank and some are not able to open the app itself.

It has come to light that Spotify is on a blocking spree on users who have installed pirated Spotify APKs (Android Package Kit) on their phones.

Spotify is right in suspending the accounts running on modified apps. Actually, it is saving them from potential data breach threats.

Several modified APKs are shared illegally on messenger apps and naive ignorant users in the garb of getting free music to install them and before they realise that bad actors would have stolen financial or personal details and sold them to the highest bidder on the darknet.

It should be noted that Spotify offers free and ad-free plans. The former can used to listen to all your favourite music and podcasts with some ads in between.

For an ad-free experience, users can always subscribe to a premium plan. It also offers the option to download music tracks into the device for offline listening while on a flight or on any long journey on the road.

Phone users are advised to install the official Spotify app only from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. The same principle applies to other apps too. It is better to be safe than pay a big price of a data breach on the phone.
