New York: A gunman armed with an AR-15-style rifle walked into a midtown Manhattan skyscraper Monday evening and began firing, killing a New York City police officer, fatally shooting three other people and critically wounding a fifth victim before killing himself, officials said.

The slain officer was identified as Didarul Islam, 36. He was assigned to a Bronx precinct, had been with the department for 3-1/2 years and was working at the building, at 345 Park Ave., in a private security role, Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference.

Islam and his wife have two children and were expecting their third, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Tisch identified the gunman as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas. He died in Rudin Management’s 33rd-floor offices, according to a person with knowledge of the circumstances of his death.

The shooting came around the time that workers in the building, between 51st and 52nd streets, would normally have been heading home. Instead, they were caught up in a chaotic scene that rippled from lockdown offices inside out into the heart of Manhattan.

Tenants of the building, which is owned by the Rudin Management real estate firm, include the NFL, investment giant Blackstone Group, and accounting and financial advisory firm KPMG.

On Monday, their employees and those of other companies that occupy the building were trapped in their offices for two terror-filled hours.
