GCHQ created an internet-based code-breaking game in an attempt track down candidates with the right skills for espionage in the computer age. The move comes after the British government announced plans to establish a specialist department within the GCHQ to tackle cyber threats.

According to the organisation, applicants would be presented with a keyword to enter into a form field on successfully cracking the code, and redirected to the agency’s recruitment website.

A spokesperson said the contest was aimed at raising the GCHQ’s profile to a relatively inaccessible audience.

“The target audience for this particular campaign is one that may not typically be attracted to traditional advertising methods and may be unaware that GCHQ is recruiting for these kinds of roles,” the spokesperson said.

“Their skills may be ideally suited to our work and yet they may not understand how they could apply them to a working environment, particularly one where they have the opportunity to contribute so much,” he added.
