The presidents of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran will meet here Thursday for a trilateral summit that focuses on regional cooperation and seeks peace and stability.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran and Afghan leader Hamid Karzai will take part in the third trilateral summit, with the first one being held in 2009.

US influence on Afghanistan and Pakistan has prevented the forum, established on President Ahmadinejad's initiative, from taking off in real terms, said Geo News.

A statement released by Karzai's office in Kabul said the Afghan leader is heading a high-ranking delegation that left for Pakistan Thursday morning.

"President Hamid Karzai left for Islamabad Thursday morning to attend a trilateral summit between Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran," Xinhua quoted the statement as saying.
