The local police in Mae Sot, near the Thailand-Myanmar border, received reports of strange cries from the forest nearby.

Upon inspection by the police and rescue personnel they discovered a Chinese man trapped at the bottom of a 12-meter-deep dry well in the forest. It took the rescue team 30 minutes to rescue the man later identified as Liu Chuanyi.

Liu had a fractured left wrist, a cerebral concussion and bruises across his body, according to SCMP. He received medical attention swiftly and now is out of danger.

With the help of a translator, Liu revealed that he had been trapped in the well for three days and nights without food or water. In order to conserve his strength he shouted out for help only once an hour.

Residents of the nearby village recall hearing strange cries emerging from the forest which became louder and more intense during the night. They believed the noise were some paranormal activity and refrained from for venturing out at night or check where the sound was emerging from.

Authorities suspect that Liu wandered into the forest and accidently fell into the well. However it is unclear why he was at the Thailand-Myanmar border. The immigration department will investigate further.

In order to prevent such incidents in the future, measures to seal the well are being taken.

The incident has been widely reported in China. One user said, “A Chinese man shouting for help in the middle of nowhere? Of course, the locals can’t understand the language and might think it was a wizard uttering spells.” “Kudos to his strength and stamina. Struggling for three days and nights but still yelling; this guy is truly impressive!” commented another.
