By 9:00 am more than 16 hours after polling stations closed, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced just 13 National Assembly results.

Five had gone to independent candidates linked to PTI, four to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and four to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Delay in poll results due to lack of communication: Interior ministry

The interior ministry has said that it the media and the public’s concerns about the late processing of the results have been reviewed.

It attributed the delay to a “lack of communication, which was a result of preventive measures taken to ensure foolproof security”. (Dawn)

PTI-backed independents maintain narrow lead as results for half the seats announced

The Election Commission of Pakistan has now announced results for more than half (136) of the National Assembly seats, as per Al Jazeera. PTI-affiliated independent candidates have maintained their narrow lead, winning 54 constituencies.

As the people of Pakistan await with bated breath the results of the general elections, many celebrities took to social media to thank the people for coming out in large numbers to vote and tried to make sense of the situation unfolding following unusual delays, leading to allegations of vote rigging.

Here's the scenario after 136 seats counted

Of the 136 seats counted by 1045 GMT (4.15pm IST) from 235 contested, independent candidates backed by Khan had won 49, according to a Reuters tally of results declared by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won 42 while the Pakistan Peoples Party of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the son of assassinated premier Benazir Bhutto, got 34. Here's what has happened so far

The results have been slowly trickling and to everybody's surprise, independents backed by Imran Khan's PTI is leading. PML(N) and PPP are not far behind but it seems no single party will touch the majority mark. Nawaz Sharif has claimed victory even though his party remains behind the independents. Sharif has hinted at a coalition government but the overall picture still looks hazy.
