Sixteen thousand displaced in Sri Lanka due to floods

Parts of the western, central, south and northwestern provinces are affected and nearly 300 houses also damaged due to heavy showers. Two camps have been set up to accommodate displaced persons in Puttalam and Gampha districts, disaster management centre said.

Several roads in capital Colombo are also under water creating long traffic jams this evening police said. Flooding in Sri Lankan parliamentary complex two weeks ago forced the speaker to postpone the proceedings.

Government has appointed a committee to make recommendations to avoid similar situation which could disrupt parliamentary functions again. The rainy weather situation likely to continue further, according to the meteorological department.
