Taipei: Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Monday called on people not to spread fake stories about foreign exchange rate talks with the United States, after the Taiwan dollar soared on speculation Washington had asked for the currency to appreciate.

Taiwan's trade surplus with the US has nothing to do with the exchange rate, and so the issue will "naturally" not be mentioned in bilateral negotiations, Lai said in a video message.
