Indian-origin lawmaker Zohran Kwame Mamdani stunned in the Democratic primary race for New York City mayor, upsetting former governor Andrew Cuomo.
Taking to his X account along with a picture he wrote, "In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City."
As Cuomo conceded the race, he said: "Tonight was not our night. Tonight is his night. He deserved it. He won.”

Mamdani is a state assemblyman from Queens and was born in Uganda on October 18, 1991, raised in New York City.
He is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Mahmood Mamdani. Some of her movies include Mississippi Masala, Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay.
Zohran, on his website says he has " fought for the working class in and outside the legislature."
"The cost of living is crushing working people but Zohran believes that government can lower costs and make life easier in our city," it further stated.
Zohran's website mentioned all the work he plans to do, for instance, 'freeze the rent', 'fast, fare free buses', 'safety', 'no cost childcare', 'city owned grocery stores', and so on.
In an interview with Little Africa News, mamdani mentioned his middle name Kwame was his fathers choice.
Kwame was added to his name after Ghanaian leader Kwame Nkrumah.
“New York is too expensive. Zohran will lower costs and make life easier,” his platform said.
