Tomiko Itooka, the world's oldest person as per Guinness World Records, passed away on December 29 at the age of 116 in Japan, with news of her death coming now.

An official in charge of elderly policies said Itooka died on December 29 at a care home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan, reported Associated Press.

Itooka was born on May 23, 1908 and became the oldest person in 2023 following the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas.

Inah Canabarro Lucas, a Brazilian nun, is now the world's oldest person, having been born on June 8, 1908.
