Spent 50 years together, couple now seek divorce

While many see this as a manifestation of one’s personal choice, experts also attribute this trend to rising levels of intolerance among couples. File photo for representation.

After over 50-years of marriage, an octogenarian couple in Punjab’s Ludhiana has filed a divorce petition wanting to finally annul their long association.

The 85-year old man and his 83-year old wife have three daughters, all well-settled and happily married. Sources said, more elderly couples are opting to end their marriage after decades of association. During a Lok Adalat held in Ludhiana a couple of months ago, another case of a 75-year-old man and his aged wife came up before the Judicial authorities. Both sought divorce and were extensively counseled to work towards an amicable settlement, but to little avail.

The couple has reportedly cited ‘incompatibility’ in marriage as a reason for the legal separation, before the National Lok Adalats in Ludhiana. The 85-year old husband is currently living in an old age home while his wife stays in a separate house. After attempts to convince the aged couple remained unsuccessful, the court has now asked for the appearance of the three daughters of the couple on the next date of hearing in the hope that the daughter might be able to impress upon their parents not to seek divorce.

While many see this as a manifestation of one’s personal choice, experts also attribute this trend to rising levels of intolerance among couples.
