Several are feared dead or missing after a huge number of devotees rushed to take 'Amrit Snan' on Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious dates in the Hindu calendar.

Reportedly, the incident took place at around 2 am.

According to government officials, pilgrims hurried to the Sangam, leading to some who were sleeping on the ground being trampled as a barrier collapsed.

Local news reports suggested that nearly two dozen people may have lost their lives in the stampede.
