Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns: Key milestones in his career

Born in the village of Kithana, Rajasthan, on May 18, 1951, Jagdeep Dhankhar graduated with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics from Maharaja's College, Jaipur. He then pursued law and earned an LL.B. from the University of Rajasthan.

Jagdeep Dhankhar joined the Bar Council of Rajasthan in 1979 and, in 1987, was elected President of the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association, becoming the youngest person to hold the position.

In 1989, Jagdeep Dhankhar entered active politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament from the Jhunjhunu constituency in Rajasthan.

In 1990, three years after becoming Bar Association President, Jagdeep Dhankhar was designated as a Senior Advocate by the High Court of Judicature for Rajasthan. Around the same time, he also began practicing primarily in the Supreme Court of India.

In 1990, he became the Chairman of a Parliamentary Committee and also served as a Union Minister. In 1993, he was elected as an MLA from the Kishangarh constituency in Rajasthan.

In 2003, Jagdeep Dhankhar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After years of association with the party, he was appointed as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019.

Jagdeep Dhankhar assumed office as Vice President of India in 2022, with his tenure expected to last until 2027. However, citing health issues, he resigned on July 21, 2025.
