Promising artistes come to fore

Four students of Samskruthi joined together as “Chatura Gamini” and gave a Bharatanatyam recital on Friday.

Aditi Sadashiva, Prithvi Sharma, Gowri Sagar and Anju Nair are learning Bharatanatyam under Sathyanarayana Raju, reputed teacher and performer. Jaya Janakee – the popular devotional in ragamalika gave them a bright start.

The kruthi Saraswathi Namasthubhyam in the raga Saraswathi was a slick composition. Jerk and Egaru – adds pep, only when used in a limited way. However, it was in the Gopa Gopi from the Krishna Karnamritha, that they went through the well knitted jathi with verve and grace. Changing the roles in quick succession, they performed till the Geethopadesha, neatly. Shivastuthi Pradosha Samayadi Parashiva Thandava (Purvi Kalyani) was neat and concluded with a crisp thillana of Dwaraki Krishnaswamy in the raga Valachi.

They exhibited a considerable amount of grace and performed with ease and assurance. Besides paying greater attention to nuances – especially Abhinaya – they must continue the training to reach great heights.

A successful utsav

Lalitha Shivaram Ubhayakar was respected in the Bangalore’s cultural field not only as a musician but also as an able organiser. She was organising every year the “Yuva Sangeet Utsav” in memory of her son (Devnandhan Ubhayakar), under the aegis of Smrithi Nandan. Hundreds of young Hindustani artistes have performed in this Utsav, during last 25 years. This year, sitar and sarod recitals, apart from vocal, were also held and brought variety and provided a feast for the connoisseurs.

Nuances in sarod recital

Arnab Bhattacharya, who gave a sarod recital, in the festival, was initiated into music by his father Pandit Swapan Bhattacharya and higher lessons under Pandit Prabhudev Das Gupta to specialise in Sahajahanpur Gharana.

He has passed “Sangeeth Prabhakar” from the University of Allahabad and has also composed music for a few documentaries. Mihir Kalyanpur, who accompanied Arnab on tabla, is a disciple of Ustad Shabeer Nissar of Hyderabad.

Arnab Bhattacharya opened his Sarod recital with raga Jhinjoti. Though it is Janya raga with Dhaivatha Anthya with limited scope in Carnatic music, it is a Sampoorna raga in Hindustani.

He tried to give the raga all the familiar nuances that one associates with it.
He rendered it with his cool, calm, sustained manner, without excitement. His sarod may become much more impressive with more experience. Mihir Kalyanpur attracted with his spirited tabla accompaniment.

An impactful vocal concert

Curtains came down on this year’s utsav with a vocal recital of Bhuvanesh Komkali.
Grandson of legendary vocalist Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Bhuvanesh is currently being trained by Vidushi Vasundhara Komkali and Pandit Madhup Mudgal.

Bhuvanesh chose Malkauns for a detailed elaboration. The raga glowed flashing potential phrases, in both vilambit and dhrut. With full involvement, he sang with an impact. Thumri was also evocative and sang the Kabir bhajan with good feeling.

No doubt Bhuvanesh Komkali has a bright future in the years to come. Vyasamurthy Katti and Gurumurthy Vaidya, who accompanied on the harmonium and the tabla shared the honours with the main artiste.
