Cong banks on star power to boost its prospects

Kannada actors criss-cross City soliciting votes for their respective party

If you are a resident of Hebbal, Basavanagudi, Padmanabhanagar, Vijayanagar, Govindarajanagar, RR Nagar, plus you happen to be a fan of Sandalwood, you might get lucky and bump into some of the actors of the big and small screens.

These popular artistes are, however, not visiting the localities to entertain you - they are doing the rounds to seek your vote for the party that they represent.

Actors-turned-ministers Ambareesh, Umashree, MLC Jayamala, Sandalwood star Bhavana, former legislators Mukhyamantri Chandru and B C Patil, former MP Shashi Kumar and Pramila Josai have been roped in by the Congress to add colour to its already aggressive canvassing.

Some of the actors who addressed the media in Bengaluru on Monday vouched for the Congress’s performance, stating that there was no alternative for a better Bengaluru.

Chandru hits out at BJP
Chandru, who has defected to the Congress from the BJP after enjoying power as the chairman of the Kannada Development Authority for many years, attacked his former party for its rampant corruption in BBMP.

He said the party had assured the people of Bengaluru that its government would set aside Rs 25,000 crore for the City’s development during its five-year term. Instead, it had left the BBMP with a burden of Rs 900 crore in the form of borrowings.

The elected representatives of the local body too had let down Bengalureans by indulging in “excessive looting” and benefiting themselves. Reeling out names of the former mayors and deputy mayors who had grown richer while they held their respective posts, he said that while former deputy mayor M Srinivas was worth Rs 34 crore, former mayor Sathyanarayana (Katte Sathya) had declared assets worth Rs 12 crore. Another former mayor Shanthakumari was worth Rs 10 crore, while former deputy mayor S K Nataraj, whose wife is contesting this time, had declared assets worth Rs 18 crore. Another former deputy mayor Harish too was worth “tens of crores”, he added.

On Monday, though Ambareesh, Umashree and Jayamala failed to show up, the rest of the actors canvassed in C V Raman Nagar and Dasarahalli.

On August 18, they will be visiting Hebbal constituency from 9 am and will also be seen at Geddalahalli bus stop at 1 pm. Between 4 pm and 9 pm, they will go around in Mahadevapura and KR Puram, and post 9 pm, they will be seen at Heggadur in
Whitefield.

On August 19, they will tour Basavanagudi and Padmanabhanagar during the day, followed by Vijayanagar, Govindarajanagar and RR Nagar in the evening.
