The family of an 84-year-old woman, who suffered cardiac arrest, has alleged that she was thrown out of the ICU by the hospital doctors saying they needed to admit another patient.

.
Vishan Devi was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on the afternoon of February 22 after a cardiac arrest.

After preliminary check-up, doctors in the emergency ward referred her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She had to wait for 10 hours in critical condition before being given a bed in the ICU.

“After two days, they removed her from the ICU unceremoniously, even before her condition could be brought under control,” said Surendra Kumar Kathpal, son of Devi.
He alleged that the hospital staff even misbehaved with his mother, throwing away the oxygen mask and tearing her clothes off.

“There seems to be some rivalry among the doctors. A Member of Parliament had recommended her case which was taken up by other senior authorities in the hospital. The doctor on duty, after two days, was not happy with the situation and thus, misbehaved with her,” said Kathpal.

Devi’s case was complicated as at this age she suffers from asthma, heart problems and has damaged kidneys.

The family took her to Ganga Ram Hospital which refused to admit her due to critical condition. Finally, after a gap of one day, she was admitted in the Lok Nayak Hospital (LNJP). Due to the lack of beds in the ICU of the hospital, she was treated in the medicine ward.

“She is being treated well here now. At least she has an oxygen mask. Taking her to various hospitals without oxygen had put her in fatal situation,” said Kathpal.
She was shifted to the coronary care unit (CCU) of LNJP on Sunday evening. “Tomorrow the doctors are shifting her to the nearby GB Pant Hospital’s CCU. There are more beds in that unit,” said Kathpal.

The authorities of RML Hospital have quoted lack of beds as the reason for removing Devi from the ICU.

“We could not keep her for longer in the ward because other patients were waiting for the beds,” said Dr B B Gupta, head, department of medicine of
unit 2.
