Cong gets CPI as partner in Telangana

The Congress found a partner in the Communist Party of India (CPI) after a long gap in Telangana and even offered the Khammam parliamentary seat to state party secretary K Narayana, thereby denying stormy petrel Renuka Chowdhury her erstwhile seat which she held for two terms.

The three-day long negotiations both at Delhi and Hyderabad had borne fruit and the CPI has accepted the offer of nine Assembly segments across five districts of Telangana, including Adilabad, Ranga Reddy, Khammam, Nalgonda and Warangal. “The tie up will be announced in a day or two,” said Narayana.

The CPI, a votary of Telangana, had differed with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) after the latter’s double edged policy for both Seemandhra and Telangana but its attempt to align with the Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS) had failed . “TRS did not accept our alliance but we have only seat adjustment with the Congress,”  said Narayana.

The CPI had hoped for a CPI-Congress-TRS alliance but there has been no response from the TRS till date. They have kept us waiting without a firm yes or no, which led to seal the tie with Congress, he said.

The CPI initially wanted two Lok Sabha and 12 Assembly seats but finally agreed when it was offered Khammam parliament seat and 9 Assembly seats.
