Hailing from Nigeria, Sam has come to India to take up studies on occupational therapy in Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences (MCOAHS). He has completed his three years diploma course in occupational therapy in Nigeria. “I came to India only for the sake of degree and nothing else. My three year diploma is not well recognised and I need to get another degree to make myself employable in Nigeria. I had the information that in Manipal, the course on occupational therapy is wonderful. My seniors in Nigeria have studied here in this college.”

Sam tells that India is really boring except for quality of education. He is of the opinion that in India, the relationships between people rarely work. He came to India in the month of August and he is here till August 2013.

Expressing his displeasure over Indians’ unfriendly behaviour, Sam says “these people are different. They are not like my country men. Nigerians are more accommodating. We greet and express our happiness over meeting each other. We behave the same with strangers. Indians are exactly opposite. People here are really boring. They go on their own and they don’t even smile at each other. They are not social,” he tells and adds that they don’t want to know each other. Indians don’t bother about each other. Caring is a strange word practised here in India. Indians should come to Nigeria and learn something from people over there in terms of behaviour, he opines.

However, Sam does not have any qualms about the way of teaching in India. He tells teaching is brilliant. They teach a lot here. Academically it is good. “In India, the therapists are not paid and we have to bear all our expenses on our own. The reason might be that I am studying in a private university,” he adds.

Sam is not happy with the way everything is imposed forcefully in the name of culture in India. “We do have a very beautiful culture and tradition in Nigeria. But we do not force it on others. Sarcastically, in India people do everything in the name of culture. I don’t say that culture is bad, but it is made to feel bad by forcing it on others. We do not have to put culture in everything we do. Everything is forced on others in the name of culture in India.”

Language is a big problem, says Sam. “I have to struggle to communicate with people as less number of people know English. Besides lifestyle, Indian food is also boring. I am not used to Indian food. However, I am survived by eating rice and bread,” informs Sam.

Although Sam wishes to have knowledge exchange initiatives between the people in Nigeria and people in India, he has an advice to his friends who wish to come to India for studies. He tells right from eating to language to relationships everything is a problem in India.

“I wish to tell my friends that you should be aware of the fact that you have come here only to work. You have many responsibilities to perform.”

Sam also has some advice to Indians. He says, Indians should try to change their life style, besides changing their way of approach towards life. They should adapt themselves for different types of behaviour, he concludes.
