Oscars perfect platform to talk about climate change: DiCaprio

His Oscar speech gave considerable importance to the current crisis of climate change as actor Leonardo DiCaprio felt it was imperative to use the stage to speak about the issue.

DiCaprio finally broke the Oscar curse with his best actor win at the 88th Academy Awards, and what was noticeable was his passion for the cause of climate change as he called upon everyone to take action about it.

When asked about his emotions regarding the win, the 41-year-old star said he felt grateful not only for the award but also for getting a chance to share his thoughts on the current environmental crisis.

"It's been amazing for me to be able to sit there and not only talk about the film, but to talk about something that I've been duly as obsessed with besides cinema, our environment and climate change. To be able to speak about that in a platform of, I don't know, hundreds of millions of people that are watching this...

"To me, this is the most existential crisis our civiization has ever known and I  wanted to speak out about that tonight," DiCaprio said in a backstage interview.

The actor, who won the award for director Alejandro Inarritu's "The Revenant", revealed he has made a documentary on climate change, for which he traveled to India.

"Simultaneously while doing this brilliant film that Alejandro directed, I've been doing a documentary about climate change which has brought me to Greenland, to China, to India to speak with the world's leading experts on this issue."

DiCaprio feels anyone, who does not understand this issue, "stands on the wrong side."

"It's imperative that we act. I feel there is a ticking clock out there. There's a sense of urgency that we all must do something proactive about this issue."

DiCaprio visited India in October-November to shoot for the documentary.
