<p>In a shocking incident, a man reportedly sold his wife for a few thousand rupees to pay for his medical treatment in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district, about 250 kilometres from here.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The ‘sold’ wife also had a four-year-old child from her husband and the boy too was part of the deal.<br /><br />The incident came to light when the woman reached the police station on Wednesday with her son, expressing her desire to return to her `former’ husband as she found her new home filthy.<br /><br />According to reports, Ram Kumar, a resident of Patraiya village, had married the woman from West Bengal around eight years back. She later came to Farrukhabad with her husband and had been living with him for the past several years.<br /><br />A few months back, Ram Kumar met with an accident and suffered permanent disability. Being poor, he found it difficult to arrange money for his treatment, reports said.<br /><br />In a bid to raise some cash, he sold his wife for Rs 12,000 to one Raju, a resident of Rajepur Saraimeda village in the same district.<br /><br />But after spending just two days with Raju, the ‘sold’ woman approached police and asked to be sent back to her ‘former’ husband’s place, sources said. Police officials said they were looking into the matter and will take action.<br /><br />‘Wife buying’ is a common practice in parts of UP, especially in areas with an adverse sex ratio. In such places, there is a shortage of brides and the youth `buy’ wives from West Bengal and Bihar. Many times these women are sold off again to others at higher prices.<br /></p>
