<p>The Mathura oil refinery has been cautioned against polluting the Keitham Lake (Soor Sarovar), which supports a bird sanctuary, on the Delhi-Agra national highway, according to an official.<br /><br />“The refinery under an arrangement with the irrigation department lifts fresh water from the Soor Sarovar and discharges waste and effluents into the lake,” said environment-activist Sharad Gupta.<br /><br />On Friday, deputy wild life conservator Sujoy Bannerjee said, “We have asked them not to release chemical wastes in the lake.”<br /><br />In September 1981, an agreement was signed between the irrigation department and the Mathura refinery for supply of water at Re 1 for 10,000 litres. The agreement expired after 25 years in 2006-07.<br /><br />“The Gokul Barrage, just 7 km from refinery, was opened in 2001. But the refinery continues to lift Agra’s share of water from Keitham Lake, that is 30 km away,” said D K Joshi,member of Supreme Court monitoring committee and petitioner in the Allahabad HC.<br /><br />Save Gangetic Dolphins</p>.<p>Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, on Friday gave his consent for being part of the ‘My Ganga My Dolphin’ campaign, run jointly by the forest department and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).<br /><br />The forest department has tied up with WWF-India to conduct a detailed census of the Gangetic Dolphins and create awareness about them among local communities. <br /><br />The last census of the dolphins was conducted in 2005. This year, the survey will begin on October 5.<br /><br />First aquifer atlas released<br /><br />There has been a sharp decline in groundwater levels in several parts of Delhi, west UP, Haryana and Rajasthan, the government said on Friday, reports PTI from New Delhi.<br />According to the data released here, which is part of country’s first-ever aquifer atlas, HP has the best groundwater level.<br /><br />The atlas, first ever compilation of aquifer systems in India, said within the Capital, south-west Delhi is the worst affected by depleting groundwater levels.<br /><br />The atlas covers 14 principal aquifers and 42 major aquifers. <br /></p>
