Police have served a notice to Aam Aadmi Party candidate Naresh Balyan to join a probe in connection with the recovery of 8,000 bottles of liquor from a warehouse in west Delhi a few days ago.

Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi on Tuesday said investigations pointed to Balyan’s role in the case.

Senior officers in Delhi Police Crime Branch, who unearthed the matter, said the candidate from Uttam Nagar, Balyan, had not been cooperating in the probe.

“Balyan was served notice today (Tuesday), but he said he was busy till the day of elections and said he could meet us only on February 8. But we have told him to join us in the probe on Wednesday,” an officer told Deccan Herald.

The investigation so far allegedly revealed that the plot from where the liquor was recovered belonged to Balyan’s cousin. “The electricity connection was found to be in the name of his sister-in-law Nirmala Devi. But the woman claimed that the plot was being used by Balyan,” said the officer.

Deccan Herald’s repeated phone calls to Balyan went unanswered. His party alleged it was a conspiracy against AAP.

Police said that a local enquiry and statements of witnesses have indicated that the liquor was meant to be distributed to voters. A search is on for the suppliers and carriers of the huge quantity of liquor.

The Crime Branch had registered a case under the Central Excise Act on Saturday after recovery of 8,352 liquor bottles that were allegedly meant to be sold only in Haryana. Balyan has not been named in the FIR.
