AAP MLA from Okhla Amanatullah Khan was arrested on Sunday after a woman alleged that the lawmaker tried to run  a vehicle over her in which he was travelling with his supporters in Jamia Nagar. He was sent to police custody for a day.

Angry supporters of Khan staged a protest outside Jamia Nagar police station, where the legislators was kept for questioning before the formal arrest. Commuters had a tough time reaching their destinations as traffic was thrown out of gear due to the demonstration by MLA supporters.

Police said that the AAP workers were blocking roads and not allowing free movement to emergency vehicles.

DCP (South East) Mandeep Randhawa said that police tried to convince the AAP workers to clear the road for the smooth movement of ambulances. Police will file an FIR in the matter, added the officer.

Explaining the reason for Khan’s arrest, Joint Commissioner of Police (South East) R P Upadhyay said: “The complainant was being put under pressure. She had asked for security.”

“The AAP sting is also a matter of investigation where workers are seen telling her to change her statement,” said Upadhyay.

On Tuesday, the woman had registered a complaint with police that a youth hurled abuses at her outside the house of the MLA Khan in Jamia Nagar and she had been receiving threats by the accused ever since.

Police had registered an FIR in the matter.

“She had alleged that the MLA did not meet her on July 10 and when she was returning home a youth abused her and asked her to stop politicising the issue of power cuts,” said the officer.

On Saturday, the woman was provided security after she lodged multiple complaints alleging that she was receiving threat to life from unknown persons.

Condemning the arrest, AAP leader Ashutosh tweeted, “Amanatullah was not even allowed to wear slippers/while arresting all the CCTV cameras were turned towards ceiling by police.”

Khan was arrested a day after the AAP had claimed that Delhi Police had been “pressurising” the woman to give a false statement against the MLA.

The party made public a video in which woman was seen telling someone that Jamia Nagar SHO had asked her to add rape and murder charges in the FIR.

Police said that the AAP "sting is also a matter of investigation where workers are seen telling her to change her statement".

Khan had written to the DCP (South-East) to take action against the SHO and the woman for incriminating him.
