Cops fret over India Gate

Last Updated 28 August 2012, 19:56 IST

Delhi Police on Tuesday said they have requested civic agencies to create additional parking space around India Gate to prevent disruption of traffic due to haphazard parking.

According to Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat, additional parking space has been sought behind the water channels located in the lawns on both sides of Rajpath.

Police said they have beefed up security arrangements and also requested civic agencies to improve lighting arrangements in the area.

“We have informed concerned agencies that India Gate can be a potential terror target as it is an iconic monument and that while security has been beefed up at the venue, lighting provided is not adequate and the entire area is poorly lit,” Bhagat added.

Bhagat, however, denied that they intend to impose restrictions to public entry at India Gate as reported in certain sections of the media.

It was earlier speculated that following repeated breach of security in the area by protesters and stunt bikers, police have written to the ministry of urban development seeking barriers to limit access to India Gate.
