'Delhi needs 75,000 houses for the poor every year'

Minister of industries Ramakant Goswami on Friday inspected the construction work at Pootkhurd near Bawana Industrial area where low cost houses for industrial workers are being built.

Industry Secretary Chetan B Sanghi briefed Goswami about the current demand and supply status of houses in Delhi.

“Delhi requires 75,000 houses for economically weaker section every year. With the aim to develop a slum free city, Delhi State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) is constructing 45,000 houses,” said Sanghi.

 13,820 houses have already been constructed at Narela, Bawana, Bhorgarh, Ghoga and Baprola under JNNURM scheme for slum dwellers, said Sanghi.

Besides the ongoing construction of 14,200 houses at Pootkhurd, work has also been awarded for another 4,560 houses at Tikri Kalan.

“The tender for another 8,420 houses is also being initiated while proposal for another 4,000 houses is under submission and approval. The houses shall be ready by 2014,” said Sanghi.

He also said the process of allotment of these houses will commence from April 2012.
DSIIDC has also conceived another scheme for transit accommodation for non-eligible slum dwellers, industrial workers, construction and migrant workers.
A project to provide housing  to about 20,000 persons has already been submitted for approval to Central government.

Another scheme for transit accommodation, which is under submission, will accomodate approximately 52,020 persons.

“Transit accomodation will provide a one-or-two room unit where five or 10 bed could be put for the stay of workers,” said Sanghi.

The minister also informed that three primary school, one senior secondary school, dispensary, a hospital, market and other community facilities will also be constructed at the housing site.
