Delhi Police on Tuesday moved court and obtained a restraining order against the telecast of the British documentary which has an interview of Mukesh Singh, one of the accused in the December 16 gang-rape case.

Assertions have been made about the victim of a crime which is a transgression of the law, Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi said on Tuesday.

A case under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505-1B (intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code as well as section 66-A of the Information Technology Act has been registered. Nobody has been named in the FIR.

“Mukesh had made offensive and derogatory remarks against women creating an atmosphere of fear and tension with the possibility of public outcry and law and order situation,” police said in a statement.

On Tuesday, a request was made to Metropolitan Magistrate Puneet Pahwa seeking to restrain telecast, publishing and transmission of the interview in view of possible law and order problem.

“The court has passed order prohibiting the interview till further order,” the statement added.
British filmmaker Leslee Udwin claims to have taken permission from the then Tihar Prisons Director General Vimla Mehra before interviewing Mukesh.

Bassi, however, said that he was not aware of the details of any permission. Currently, Mehra is posted as Special Commissioner of Delhi Police (General Administration and Planning and Implementation).

The parents of the victim have also been outraged over Mukesh’s statements. “Such people don’t want women to have freedom,” her father told reporters.
