DTC workers strike fizzles out

Last Updated 30 January 2014, 20:46 IST

The strike conducted by contractual employees of Delhi Tansport Corportation has almost ended. Now only 50 are retaining ground at the Millennium Depot, near Nizamuddin bus terminal, demanding permanent jobs.

In the evening, Transport Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj convinced the employees to end protest, some of whom were on hunger strike.

Following the AAP government ultimatum to end the strike or face the axe, over 500 employees had already returned to work on Thursday morning. Almost one-fifth of the 14,000 contractual drivers and conductors of the state corporation were on strike since the last four days.

The number of buses that went off road reduced to 697, easing problem of commuters marginally. Mostly buses from the Millennium Depot were affected, said R S Minhas, Senior Manger (Public Relations).

Outer ring road bus service that encircles the city of Delhi was the worst affected.
The government broke the stalemate situation by constituting a high-level committee to formulate guidelines for regularisation of jobs, which stands as one of the key pre-poll promises.

“Now that so many have called off the protest, there is no point for others to continue,” said Rampath Kasana, member of DTC workers union.
