Aimed at improving security at railway stations in the capital, 160 new Closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) have been installed at the New Delhi railway station. This comes in addition to around five dozen security cameras which are already installed at the station.

“The additional 160 cameras would help us in monitoring the security concerns at the station in a better way. Out of 160 new cameras, around 60 of them are zoom cameras,  a senior Northern Railways official said.

“The zoom cameras come up with an additional feature of having infra-red features which can capture images even at night. Moreover, in comparison to other cameras, they could also save footage for more number of days,” he added.

The officials said the installation of CCTV has been in the pipeline for quite some time due to the large footfall at the New Delhi station. The station, with an average footfall of 5 lakh per day, records the maximum number of footfall amongst all the railway stations in the city. Over 200 trains operate from the station.

Added security

Apart from the security cameras, additional high capacity baggage scanning machines have also been set up. Now the number of scanners at the station has gone up to eight from the previous four.

A central control room is coming up on the Ajmeri Gate side of the station, which would be handed over to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) for
operation and control of the cameras, officials said.

While installation of the additional cameras and scanners at NDLS was completed in the last week of May, CCTVs and scanners would also be installed at other major stations in the capital by the end of this month.

“Within a month, such security instruments would also be installed at stations like Old Delhi, Anand Vihar, Nizamuddin, Sarai Rohilla, Tilak Bridge and Shivaji bridge. However, the number of cameras and scanners would vary from station to station as per the requirement,” the official said.

While 137 cameras would be installed at the Old Delhi station, 65, 40 and 33 CCTVs would be installed at other three major stations in the capital Nizamuddin, Anand Vihar and Sarai Rohilla respectively.
