Shiv Sena candidates too in fray on 18 seats

Shiv Sena, a key ally of the BJP, has fielded as many as 18 candidates in Delhi, a move that may queer the pitch for the saffron party which is up against a stiff challenge posed by the Aam Aadmi Party.

Though not a major player, Shiv Sena claims to have contributed to the defeat of at least one BJP candidate in the 2013 Assembly elections in Delhi.

Shiv Sena candidate from Vikaspuri, Sangeeta Chauhan, had polled only 634 votes in the 2013 elections. But these small numbers were enough to ensure the defeat of BJP candidate Krishan Gahlot who lost to AAP candidate Mahinder Yadav by a margin of 405 votes.

Sena has tasked senior leader Chandrakant Khaire with steering the party campaign in Delhi. Sena MPs Anil Desai and Rahul Shewale and Maharashtra legislator Sandipan Bhomre have addressed several meetings in the capital.

“We have been contesting elections in Delhi since 1993,” Khaire told Deccan Herald.
The Shiv Sena had prodded the BJP to enter into an alliance in Delhi, but it did not receive a favourable response.

“Our only agenda is to take the Shiv Sena symbol in every state. We stand for Hindutva as also development,” Khaire said.

Other issues raised by Sena include threat posed by Pakistan-based terror groups, the problem of Bangladeshi immigrants, traffic woes in the capital and lack of adequate sanitation facilities.

He said the party had fielded candidates in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Haryana.

In the 2013 Assembly elections, Shiv Sena had polled 3,734 votes that constitute 0.05 per cent of the total electorate.
