In an effort to enhance its revenue, the South Corporation will provide ‘Unique Property Identification Code’ to all properties to bring them under the tax net.

The civic agency has signed an memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a private firm to allot this unique property code to each building under its limits.

“The structural and functional changes are required in the property tax department to increase the civic agency’s revenue. The first step in this direction will be to transform the present property tax collection system to 3D GIS-based system by bringing all the properties on a single platform like electronic platform and provide unique property identity to each of them,” a spokesperson said. “An MoU has been signed with Geospatial Delhi Ltd to allot UPIC to each building located within the jurisdiction of South Corporation for collecting property tax,” said SDMC.

According to the civic agency, the section 125 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 provides for assignment of property identification code. “So it the responsibility of the corporation to provide unique identification code in respect of each premise located within its jurisdiction,” the civic agency said.

In 2012-13, four lakh properties were brought under the tax net by the South Corporation. There are 14.91 lakh properties within the jurisdiction of south civic agency, according to the Geospatial Delhi Ltd. “Considering that 20 per cent properties are non-taxable for various reasons, about 12 lakh properties still should come under the tax net,” the spokesperson added.
