Sports quota students await admission nod

They might have won laurels for the country and their state, but five young sportspersons are facing an uphill task in getting admission to Lucknow University under the sports quota.

International taekwondo atheletes Varsha Singh and Satyavan Gaur, UP under-19 cricket team member Shubhang Raj, football national level player Srikant Kannauji and volleyball player Mohit Singh Taliyan have sought admission for different courses in the university under the quota but are still awaiting a positive response.

Singh, who won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth international championship in Chennai last year, said she sought admission to BCom after which the University Athletics Association had sent her case to Vice Chancellor Prof Manoj Singh.

The VC had forwarded it to the admissions coordinator, Rajiv Pandey, however, she was refused an admission on the grounds that the admission process had concluded. The case of Mohit Singh Taliyan, who had taken part in several national level volleyball tournaments, bears similar resemblance to Singh’s.

After failing to get a positive response from the university, he along with some other players like him have now sent a letter to the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on Thursday seeking justice.

The VC said the admissions coordinator knows the concerned rules better and needs to be contacted. He said he does not personally take decisions and works on the suggestions of officials as per the rules.
