Treatment plants by DMRC

Will use recycled water for cleaning its trains

In a bid to recycle and reuse waste water for cleaning trains and other purposes, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has set up state-of-the-art effluent treatment plants and sewage treatment plants at its depots and residential colonies.

It will save about 143 kilolitres of water every day.

Five depots of the DMRC – Sarita Vihar, Shastri Park, Yamuna Bank, Sultanpur and Khyber Pass with three residential colonies at Shastri Park, Sarita Vihar and Yamuna Bank have been equipped with these plants.

“The treated water generated by these plants is currently being used mostly for horticultural and toilet related purposes within the depot and residential premises. The plants at Najafgarh and Dwarka are under renovation,” said DMRC.

“Plans are afoot to have similar facilities in the depots which are going to come up as part of the third phase of Delhi Metro’s expansion,” it added.

According to the DMRC, about 125 kilolitres per day (KLD) of water is being reused at these depots from the sewage treatment plants (STP). At the colonies, some 260 KLD of water is being reused.

“Feasibility studies are being conducted to explore the possibility of installing similar plants at other locations,” it said.

The DMRC said some 18 KLD of water is being reused at the depots through the effluent treatment plants (ETP). Last year, the Delhi Metro added 99 rainwater harvesting pits at 37 locations with capacity of 990 cubic metre.

“The Delhi Metro is taking all possible measures to rationalise its use of water and recycle and reuse water as much as possible. In order to streamline the water conservation measures of the organisation, a detailed water policy has been put in place since 2013 and efforts are on to achieve the goals set in that policy,” it said.

As part of the policy, the DMRC is also developing an Environmental Management System (EMS) to promote awareness about the need to conserve water amongst DMRC’s employees and stakeholders.

“Water conservation is an integral part of DMRC’s environment protection measures. The DMRC is taking a number of eco-friendly steps such as construction of green buildings under its phase 3 project, setting up of solar power plants, rainwater harvesting at stations and viaducts, among others,” it added.
