<p>Sangeetha Samarambha<br /><br /></p>.<p>Music, drama and vocal ensemble were held on the occasion of the “Shastipurthi Samarambha” of R K Padmanabha, senior musician, last week.<br /><br />Mysore Nagaraj and Mysore Manjunath, reputed violinists of Carnatic music gave a solo violin concert on Friday. The popular Devaranama “Narayana enniro” became the auspicious curtain riser for the duo. With a elaborate swara prasthara, it became evocative. “Raga Sudharasa” was rendered with full of feeling. The swarajati of Syama Sastry was also wholesome and they brought a convincing imagery of the melody. <br /><br />Sindhubhairavi was impressive with lilting melody. By their talent and expertise, the composition “Bhava Layada” (R K Padmanabha) acquired a special delight. The percussionists (double mridanga) Mushnam Raja Rao and H S Sudhindra combined effectively to add to the enjoyment. With their impeccable mastery and virtuosity the brothers enthralled the music lovers.<br /><br />Sp</p>.<p>arkling nerval<br /><br />Final concert of the “Shastipurthi Samarambha” was a vocal concert by T M Krishna. Over the years, Krishna has become a crowd puller, with his charismatic music. He opened the concert straight away with the composition “Deva Deva”, with alapana and Nerval and sparkling swara passage enlivening the portrayal. “Ye papamu jesitha” is another dignified keerthane. Any how the piece de resistance of the concert was “Dasharathi Nee Runamu”.<br /><br />His voice travelled in all the 3 octaves with ease and assurance, and the alap flowed with resonant exactitude. The keerthana was embellished with a flurry of swara prasthara, which was an affirmation of his creative moods which left a pleasing impact. H K Venkataram stole the show with his judicious play on violin, while the percussionists - Mannargudi Easwaran and Ullur Giridhar Udupa - accompanied with good understanding.<br /><br />A promising dancer<br /><br />Shivani Shivakumar, who gave a dance recital at the Ravindra Kalakshetra, is a student of Shivapriya School of Dance. Though quiet young, she has already performed in many places of Karnataka. She has won a number of prizes, including “Kuniyonu Baara”, show of Zee TV (Rs 2 lakh)) and “Prathibha Karanji”, best allrounder trophy from her school - Baldwin Girls’ High School.<br /><br />Shivani executed the opening Pushpanjali pleasingly. The Jathiswara was in the lesser known Vitapi raga, composed by flautist Jayaram. The varna “Devadideva” (Shanmukhapriya) was performed admirably. It included “Navarasa” also in the “Sanchari”. <br /><br />After the varna, another lengthy composition “Brochevarevarura” followed. Her Abhinaya as performed in the Devaranama of Purandaradasaru, was restrained but impactful. No doubt Shivani Shivakumar has a bright future in the years to come. <br /><br />Another interesting thing was, Sanjay Shantharam, who always performs Natuvanga, shone as a vocalist. Guru Shama Sanjay (natuvanga), Gurumurthy (mridanga), Chithra Lingam (veena), Jayaram (flute) and Prasanna Kumar (rhythm pad) - supported from the wings.<br /><br />KCP music festival<br /><br />The Karnataka College of Percussion (KCP) conducted the annual music festival last week, in collaboration with Sri Rama Mandira, Malleswaram. R A Ramamani, who gave a vocal recital here, is known not only as a senior vocalist, but also as an able teacher.<br /><br />She is equally popular in the jazz and fusion music field. In the current concert, after “Ramanannu brovara”, she elaborated “Marivere”, in a matured way. With brief raga she sang “Giripai”, with good “Bhava”. Mohana revealed her firm hold on the idiom and the keerthana (Mohana Rama) was sung scholarly and convincingly.<br /><br />In between few devotionals like - Bandevaiah Govinda, Venkateshanatham and Kagada Bandide - delighted the audience. B Raghuram, Anoor Dathatreya Sharma and Sukanya Ramgopal - accompanied on violin, mridanga and ghata, respectively.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Melodic fervour<br /><br />Suma Sudhindra is an internationally acclaimed artiste who is not only a popular veena player but also a senior teacher and a reputed organiser. In the first half, she chose Kharaharapriya which saw her in an ebullient mood and with melodic fervour. In the second half Purvikalyani acquired a special delight, with a flurry of lilting ‘sangathies’.<br /><br />The imposing krithi “Meenakshee” was embellished with shining swara passages. Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma (mridanga) and Narayana Murthy (Ghata) rose to great heights in their supporting roles. With a popular thillana, Suma Sudhindra concluded her Veena recital, held under the aegis of the KCP.<br /></p>
