<p>Cricketer Yuvraj Singh’s mother on Wednesday praised her son’s grit for fighting off cancer and setting an example for other survivors and patients.<br /><br /></p>.<p>Speaking at a function here to mark the World Cancer Day, Shabnam Singh said: “Cancer is curable and the will power of a patient to recover helps in speedy recovery.”<br /><br />“My son is fit and once again playing cricket for the country. This is a message for all that the battle against cancer can be won,” Shabnam Singh added.<br /><br />She was speaking at a discussion forum “Cancer: Awareness to Advocacy” organised by The Cancer Foundation (TCF) and Yuvraj Singh Foundation (YouWeCan) – an NGO of the cricketer. <br />The TCF, a think tank of cancer survivors headed by Meenu Puri, supports the UN Sustainable Development goals including the right to health.<br /><br />Early detection<br />Oncologist Rakesh Chopra said: “We need to emphasise on early detection and screening along with encouraging healthy lifestyle for curing cancer.”<br /><br />While interacting with young cancer patients and survivors, chairperson of NGO Cankids Kidscan Poonam Bagai said: “Early diagnosis is the best step in the direction of making the country reach the 90-95 per cent curable rate of childhood cancer.”<br /><br />At the event, cancer survivors interacted with doctors and patients and narrated their tales of overcoming the disease.<br /><br />According to Indian Council of Media Research, 1.11 million cases of cancer were diagnosed in 2014. <br />There has been a nine per cent increase in diagnosed cases since 2011 when the figure stood at 1.02 million.</p>
