A Bengaluru-based firm is in the process of finding a way to get a car to don over 1,800 colours — through a patented process which gets a car to change its body shade in 10 minutes.
Zip Zap Zoom Cars (Z3 Cars) has been perfecting the ‘colour changing’ process, which it claims will rewrite the way cars would be painted in future.
Z3 Cars Founder and CEO Srinivas Devathi says, “Each car has 13 external panels. Each panel will get a vest, which will have a minutely thin gap with two to four inlet and outlet ports, through which colour can be injected. The vest is transparent, with its exterior thickness at just around 3 mm at present.”
This process, Devathi claims, will eliminate the concept of a paint shop at the car manufacturing plant. “In terms of Z3 Cars’ process, in the press shop level itself, the pressed body panels will have corresponding vests installed, while the paint shop is eliminated. The body directly moves to the assembly line. The car with ‘body in white’ heads directly to the dealers’, where the vests get injected in the customers’ choice of colour. Customers can change their car colour in under 15 months,” he said.
