New members for State's Universities soon: Minister

Last Updated 25 October 2018, 11:58 IST

Minister for Higher Education G T Devegowda said on Monday that nominated syndicate and executive council members of public universities would be changed soon.

The Syndicate is the highest decision-making body of a university. The government can nominate up to six 'eminent educationists' to the Syndicate, including one belonging to the SC/ST community, one OBC member, a woman and a member of a religious minority community.

Speaking to reporters here, the minister said it was common to change the nominated members whenever there is a change in government. "Thus, new members will be appointed in all universities of the state. The members will be changed after discussing with leaders of both the Congress and JD(S),” Devegowda said.

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah has asked Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy not to remove Syndicate members nominated by the previous Congress government. The government has nominated academic experts from all categories as Syndicate and Executive Council members, he had stated.

The minister said JD(S) leaders will appoint district incharge ministers soon. “I know ex-CM Siddaramaiah better and he will not oppose me being the district incharge minister,” said Devegowda.
