BJP demands Surathkal–Kana–MRPL road work

Mangaluru City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty addresses protesters in Surathkal.

Demanding the development of the Surathkal-Kana Road connecting MRPL, members of the BJP Surathkal unit staged a protest and a road block.

Mangaluru City North MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty accused the state government of failing to develop the constituencies won by the BJP MLAs in the coastal belt. The government is conspiring to suppress the strength of the BJP, he alleged.

“The previous government had released Rs 58 crore for the four-laning of the stretch with a bicycle track. Even the foundation stone for the development of the stretch has been laid. As only one person had applied for tender, the work could not be taken up. The government has failed to float tenders again, in spite of demand to do so,” said the MLA.

Shetty warned of staging a road block if tenders were not floated again within 10 days.

Corporator Tilakraj Krishnapura said, “The government has not taken up the work as the constituency has a BJP MLA. It is a tragedy that a representative has to stage a protest against the government seeking funds for road work.”

AC Ravichandra Nayak met the protesters. He said, “As only one person had applied for the tender, the government is initiating measures to float the tender once again. The problems faced by the local residents will be brought to the notice of the state government.”
