The construction arm of infrastructure major L&T will undertake civil works for the two new plants of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) project in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
The KKNPP is India’s first Light Water Reactor (LWR) of 6 units with a generation capacity of 1000 MWe each. It is the largest Indian nuclear power station.
L&T Construction has secured the order of the project from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), according to a press statement issued in Mumbai on Thursday.
The company will construct the main plant civil works of the Kudankulam 5&6 units of 1000 MWe each.
The scope of work includes the construction of the reactor building, reactor auxiliary building, turbine building, diesel generator building and other safety-related structures in a period of 64 months.
L&T is currently executing similar works of Kudankulam 3&4 units (KKNPP 3&4) in the same premises.
The first reactor of the plant attained criticality on July 13, 2013, and was connected to the grid three months later. It started commercial operation on December 31, 2014. The second unit achieved criticality on July 10, 2016 and was connected to the grid in August.
