Centre extends date for filing GST returns

Last Updated 27 October 2018, 08:17 IST

The Centre has extended deadline for filing September Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns by five days to October 25.

This has been done to facilitate businesses who had expressed concern about the October 20 deadline, saying there would be trouble in reconciling their sales returns with the purchase returns filed by their suppliers.

Since the ITC is availed on the basis of summary sales return or GSTR-3B filed, hence the deadline for ITC claims and GSTR-3B have been kept as October 25.

“It has been brought to notice that there have been apprehensions by trade and industry relating to the last date for availment of ITC for the period July, 2017 to March, 2018. In order to remove doubts, it was clarified that as per the law, the last date for availing ITC in relation to the period from July, 2017 to March, 2018 is the last date for the filing of return in the FORM GSTR-3B for the month of September, 2018,” the finance ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said that for those taxpayers who have been recently migrated from erstwhile tax regime to GST regime, the last date for availing ITC for the period July, 2017 to March, 2018, is December 31, 2018 or the date of filing of annual return whichever is earlier," the statement added.
