From Rs 275 to Rs 10,000: IndiGo hikes fuel charges for domestic and international flights

Bengaluru: Airlines in India have begun passing on the impact of rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices to passengers, even as the government stepped in to cushion domestic carriers. While most airlines are yet to take a call on fare hikes, IndiGo on Wednesday announced a revision in fuel charges for both domestic and international routes, applicable to all new bookings from April 2, 2026.

Under the revised structure, fuel charges on domestic routes range from Rs 275 for flights up to 500 km, to Rs 900 for sectors above 2,000 km. For international travel, the surcharge varies from Rs 900-2,500 within the Indian Subcontinent, to Rs 3,000-10,000 for longer-haul destinations.

"IndiGo reiterates that the measure has been driven by a sudden and substantial change in the operating environment," the airline said in a statement, adding that it will continue to monitor the situation and make relevant adjustments as and when appropriate.

ATF prices surged sharply on Wednesday, with rates for non-scheduled, ad hoc and charter operations crossing Rs 2.07 lakh per kilolitre (kl)—a steep jump from Rs 96,638.14 last month.

To shield the domestic aviation market from global crude volatility, the Centre capped the increase for scheduled airlines at 25 per cent. As a result, domestic carriers are seeing a more moderate rise of about 8.6 per cent.
