<p>India’s high-value currency story is nearing its final chapter as Rs 2000 notes almost disappear from circulation. In a fresh update, the Reserve Bank of India said that a massive 98.45% of these notes have already been returned by the public, signalling a sharp shift away from the denomination. </p><p>As per the RBI, the total worth of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation was Rs 3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023, when its withdrawal was announced. Subsequently, printing of Rs 2000 banknotes was stopped in 2018-19.</p>.RBI gets another Rs 74 crore of Rs 2,000 notes in November.<p>Since May 2023, citizens were given multiple options to deposit or exchange the notes through banks and later directly via RBI offices. Currently the circulation of Rs 2000 notes have declined sharply.</p><p>Despite this sharp decline, the central bank has clarified that Rs 2000 notes continue to remain legal tender. This means they are still valid for transactions, even though they are no longer being actively circulated.</p><p>For those who still hold these notes, the window isn’t shut yet. Individuals can continue to deposit them through designated RBI offices or even send them via post for credit into their bank accounts.</p>
