The Centre is expected to soon announce the successor of Urjit Patel, the RBI Governor who stunned the nation by putting in his papers on Monday after a run-in with the government over the autonomy of the central bank.

Till the time the government zeroes in on his successor, the senior most Deputy Governor N S Vishwanathan may be made interim head of RBI.

Top contenders for the post of RBI Governor are Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Garg, former finance secretary Shaktikant Das and former RBI Deputy Governor Subir Gokarn.

Das, who had earlier served on the RBI Board, is currently a member of the 15th finance commission.

Garg, who brings in his international experience and local knowledge of the economy, has been a Director at Reserve Bank of India since July 12, 2017.

He was an executive director of the World Bank Group from November 2014 to July 2017.

Garg is 1983-batch IAS Officer of Rajasthan cadre. He has also been a director of Life Insurance Corporation of India since August 21, 2017.

Gokarn is an outstanding macro-economist, whose name was suggested by former RBI Governor D Subbarao as his successor during the UPA regime but could not be cleared. He was an executive director at the Board of IMF.

The Centre, which has been caught unawares by the sudden resignation of Patel, is yet to decide on a possible successor but the announcement will be made in a day or two, sources said.
