The government has extended the last date for filing GST returns and tax payment for the month of July by five days to August 25, 2017.

An announcement to this effect was made by the Goods and Services Taxes Implementation Committee, consisting of State and Central government officers, on Saturday.

Since it would be the first return to be filed under GST, tax payers and the tax practitioners had requested for a few more days to file their return, an official release said.

There have also been requests from the States hit by floods to extend the last date for filing of GST returns.

Jammu and Kashmir requested for an extension of time because of the state assembly was late in passing the GST Ordinance.

Some technical glitches were also experienced by last minute return filers. Earlier, the last date for payment of taxes and filing of GST Return in Form 3B for the month of July was kept as August 20.

The release said for those tax payers, who do not want to avail of transitional credit in TRANS1 this month, the date for return filing will be August 25.  For those who want to fill up TRANS1 this month, the last date for filing of returns will be August 28 as announced earlier.

“In order not to face any last moment technological difficulty in submission of return, all taxpayers are requested to kindly file their return well before August 25 and 28 deadline and not wait for the last date,” the release added.

Since Saturday morning, traders across the country experienced difficulties in filing returns and uploading GSTR 3B on the GST Network portal -- the company mandated to build the IT backbone for the new indirect tax regime.

GST Network took to twitter, saying, “The GST portal is experiencing some issues. Kindly try after some time.”

The filing of maiden GST returns for July commenced on August 5.
Under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, which was implemented from July 1, businesses are expected to file monthly tax returns. While 72 lakh assessees of the old indirect tax regime have migrated to the GST Network portal, nearly 50 lakh have completed the migration process.
