Indian SEs 2nd best among global peers

For six-year period ending December 2009, BSE Sensex posted positive return of 199.1 per cent with the index at 17,465 points, while Indonesian market gave the biggest return to investors, as Jakarta Composite Index registered a jump of 264.1 per cent to 2,510 at the end of December 2009.

Indian stock market posted better returns compared to the 65.2 per cent returns for five-year period ending 2008. At the end of 2007, Indian markets gave a record high return of 247.4 per cent over 2003- end level, it was lower than 296.8 per cent return in Indonesia.

Further, the Survey noted that domestic equity markets are fast integrating themselves with the major global peers, a trend that helped in larger capital inflows from overseas investors during the current fiscal.  Similarly, investors in Sensex companies turned richer in 2009, raking in returns of over 76 per cent on their investments, as the collective market valuation of the 30-bluechip companies nearly doubled to Rs 26.49 lakh crore last year.
