Nifty loses early gains, ends below 6,000 level

Last Updated 22 September 2010, 14:32 IST

The 50-share index shuttled between 6,037.40 and 5,946.45 points before closing at 5,991.00, down by 18.05 points, or 0.30 per cent, from its last close. Nifty had scaled the 32-month high of the 6,000-level yesterday on the back of strong FII inflows.

The market opened on a firm note despite mixed Asian cues and turned volatile in early afternoon trade due to profit-taking. Lower European opening further put selling pressure and the key index slipped into red. However, buying by foreign funds towards the end helped the market to cut short its losses.

Top five Nifty losers were JP Associates, which fell 3.04 per cent, Cairn 2.38 per cent, L&T 2.37 per cent, RCom 2.13  per cent and TCS lost 1.96 per cent. Maruti, ABB, HDFC, SBIN and ITC were the notable gainers.

The total turnover in the cash segment declined to Rs 17,058.74 crore from Rs 17,933.16 crore yesterday. A total of 8,930.18 lakh shares changed hands in 71,53,760 trades. The market capitalisation was Rs 69,36,322 crore.
