<p>Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Pegatron Corporation, one of the largest contract manufacturers of Apple iPhones, inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday for setting up its first India production unit on the outskirts of Chennai.</p>.<p>Tata Group's Tata Electronics also signed an agreement for setting up a unit that will manufacture platforms for smartphones among other equipment in Hosur, just outside Bengaluru.</p>.<p>While the Tata unit will come up at an investment of Rs 4,684 crore, Pegatron Corporation has pledged an investment of Rs 1,100 crore. Tata's investment is expected to go up to Rs 7,000 crore.</p>.<p>Pegatron Corporation's unit will generate 14,079 persons. Over 18,000 persons will get employment in Tata's electronics manufacturing unit.</p>.<p>These investments are part of 28 MoUs with a cumulative investment of Rs 28,053 crore granting employment to 68,775 persons.</p>.<p>DH had consistently reported about Pegatron choosing Chennai and Tatas making an investment in Hosur. Pegatron Corporation becomes the second contract manufacturer of Apple to set up a unit in Tamil Nadu after Foxconn. Sources told DH that Pegatron will assemble high-end Apple phones at the factory in Mahindra Work City in Chengalpattu.</p>.<p>The Tamil Nadu Cabinet had last month approved a special package and incentives for Pegatron Technology India Private Limited. With another contract manufacturer Wistron also functioning from Bengaluru, South India is set to emerge as the hub for manufacturing of Apple iPhones in the country. Foxconn has also pledged an investment of Rs 7,000 crore to expand its facilities to assemble Apple iPhones in Chennai.</p>.<p>Pegatron setting up its manufacturing unit in Chennai comes as a boost to Tamil Nadu, which aims to contribute 25 per cent of India’s total electronic exports to the world and increase the industry's output to $100 billion by 2025.</p>.<p>Already home to top 16 electronics manufacturers, including Nokia, Samsung, Flex, Dell, Motorola, Salcomp, HP, and Foxconn, the state is now aiming to contribute 25 per cent of India’s total electronic exports to the world by 2025. India's electronic exports stood at $11.28 billion in 2019-20. At present, Tamil Nadu is the second largest manufacturing hub in the country and accounts for 16 per cent of national production of electronics and hardware.</p>
